Rice Terraces in Banaue

The Banaue Rice Terraces are 1995 UNESCO World Heritage Site, and are often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World".

The rice terraces are partly more than 2,000 years old. They were built from the trunk of the Ifugao in painstaking handwork. The rice terraces were built up to heights of 1,500 meters. Strung together, the rice terraces would stretch halfway around the globe.

Who wants to stay only briefly in Banaue, which should take at least Banaue Viewpoint. This is located about 4 km outside of the village in the direction of Bontoc. The best view you have here in the early morning or late afternoon hours.

Highly recommended are trekking in the surrounding Ifugao villages and through the large and impressive rice fields and rice terraces. There is a large network of trails through the countryside. Whoever undertakes a larger hike, which should go out with a local guide. There are exciting and varied multi-day hikes.

Best time to Banaue and the surrounding rice terraces is February to May.
